Warm and sunny was the recipe for the start of the MHSAA Division 1 Track and Field state finals at East Kentwood HS. Isabel German took advantage of this weather which did have a bit of a cross wind as she vaulted clean throughout the day in route to a runner up finish in the pole vault. Isabel’s 12’6” jump is 3” below her PR jump and matched the efforts by fellow OK White member Aubree Bowers (FHC) but German’s clean jumping earned the spot-on misses. The event, won by Brooke Bowers of FHC going 12’9” highlighted the OK White by capturing the top three positions. Bowers missed three attempts at 13’8” which would have set a new state meet record breaking Greenville’s and OK White Landon Kemp’s record of 13’7”.
The weather on the track was not like the morning weather as the winds increased and the clouds eventually brought drizzle for the two races that Lowell had runners in. Isabel German was up first seeded 11th in the 400m coming off a PR of 58.33 at the regional meet two weeks ago. German mustered her energy to throw down a 59.36 which was her second fastest time ever to finish 5th in her heat and 16th overall. The overall finish was pretty good considering that all nine runners in the last heat (fast heat) ran PRs on the wet track.
Christopher Wigger followed in the 300 hurdles which was the following event. Wigger was seeded 26th of all entries and ended up 20th by winning his heat in a 40.79. Getting a great time is hard when you are running by yourself as Wigger won his heat by over 10 meters. The learning experience will pay dividends just as German’s 2023 state meet experience helper her this year.

Seventeen LMS athletes joined one thousand of their peers in participating in the All-Weather Seal Megastar Track Invitational held at Red Arrow Stadium this past Wednesday. It was one of the largest track meets in the state as there were 84 schools represented as well as 20 unattached athletes (not affiliated with a school). Lowell competed in the “Large” school division and saw some PR performances as well as school records get established on a near perfect evening. Competing in the meet itself is an accomplishment as the athletes needed to hit a qualifying mark to be entered. Getting the best of the best is the goal of the meet.
Seventh grader Avi Elabed had a big day as he medaled in both the 1600m and 3200m finishing in 5th and 2nd respectively. Avi’s 1600m time of 4:56 was a PR while his 3200m time of 10:34.24 was a new school record. The pole vault saw the other school record as McKoye Yaw went 10’ which was good for 3rd place. Other medalists for the boys were Braam Maatman finishing 5th in the 400 (56.02PR) and Ty Malach finishing 6th in the 200H (28.80PR).
Seven girls represented LMS at the meet with four athletes setting new personal records. Lily Dyer set two of those PR’s as she medaled in the two hurdle events as she took 3rd in the 55H (9.48) and 6th in the 200H (32.00). The two other PR’s were set by Maddyn Johnston in the 100m (13.67) and Emma Putnam in the 1600m (5:45.72).
Other Lowell athletes involved in the meet were
Ty Malach 400m, 1600mR
Jacob Flickenger 800m, 3200mR
Tyler Bromley 1600m, 3200mR
Zaden Perfitt 1600mR
Lyle O’Boyle PV
Vaughn Gage 3200mR
Jaeger Smith HJ
Ellery Bieneman SP
Grace Walz 1600mR
Kendall Schmuker 400m / 1600mR
Eleanor Pastor 55H
The regional day didn’t start super for Isabel German. A third-place vault of 11’6” in the PV which secured a spot in the MHSAA State Meet did not satisfy her as it wasn’t as high as she has been going, but that isn’t where the day ended. German channeled her emotions and used it to press the pace in the 400m dash going end to end for the regional win winning it in 58.33. The outcome took a minute for the timer to separate German and St Joseph’s Naia Dibkey as they went toe to toe the final 100m with the final difference being .02 seconds. German’s time also moves her to #2 on the LHS board jumping ’03 graduate Natalie Kent and right behind ’13 grad Rachael Walters.
Lowell’s hurdler Leah Krieger faced a loaded field in both the 100 /300 hurdles with a goal of finally punching her ticket to the big meet. In the 100H event Krieger went 15.77 which was good for 3rd but was just off the state AQ time needed. Kreiger followed it up in the 300h with a time of 47.88 good for 4th. In the field events there were two big PR’s as Piper Risdon tossed the discus 94’9” which was good enough for 9th place and Claire O’Boyle hit 4’8” on her third attempt in the HJ.
Next up for the Arrows is the Metro Health Scholarship meet on Tuesday @ Byron Center HS.
The State Meet is on June 1st at East Kentwood HS.
The Lady Arrows entered the Ok White Conference meet with a 5th place regular season finish and that is where the girls finished when the scoring was completed. The meet started out on Wednesday with a new school record as Isabel German broke her own school record of 12’0 set at the GR Elite Challenge as she soared 12’9” to capture 2nd place in the conference. The event won by FHC Brooke Bowers who set a new OK White conference meet record of 13’3”. German continued her scoring on day two as she captured three additional medals with a 2nd in the 400m, a 3rd in the 200m, and 5th in the 100m.
Lowell also had a conference champion with Leah Krieger grabbing the win in the 300H running a PR 46.99 which moved her to #3 on the LHS record board. Earlier in the meet Krieger grabbed silver medalist honors in the 100H setting a new PR of 15.60 as well as a 5th place finish in the long jump going 15-08.
Leah earned all-conference honors with her win and Isabel earned the honor as one of the leading point scorers (26 pts) in the conference meet.

Lowell is at Portage Central next Friday for the MHSAA regional meet.
Capturing all four relays was the primary difference as the Lady Arrows came up short against Byron Center. The Arrows were able get four wins and four runners-up on the day which allowed the meet to stay competitive but wasn’t enough. Isabel German was a double winner grabbing the 400m and the Pole Vault. Audrey Latchaw and Leah Krieger won the 800 and the 300H respectively. Piper Risdon joined German and Kreiger in capturing silver medal honors in the SP while the other two hit PR’s in the 100m and 100H respectively.

German’s vault was good for 2nd place in the event won by Brooke Bowers from Ok White foe Forest Hills Central with a vault of 12’6”. Leah Krieger continued to get it done in the hurdles as she took runner up honors in the 100MH in a time of 15.88. As in the pole vault the hurdle event was won by OK White competitor Natalie Formsma from Byron Center. Kreiger then joined teammates Claire O’Boyle, Josephine Costello, and Anika Huhn to take second place in the shuttle hurdle relay with a time of 1:11.23.
Sophomore Audrey Latchaw took advantage of qualifying for the Elite 800m by running a PR 2:27.13 which moved her to #9 on the LHS record board. The final scoring event for Lowell was the Swedish Relay (100-200-300-400) where the team of Brooklyn Braun, Laney Bieneman, Isabel German, and Krieger, took 4th place in a time of 2:28.68 which was about 10 seconds faster than in 2023.
